So... what is the first step for
ALL building projects?
There are many sites out there that will help you figure out how to complete building projects. But, not many that help you start.
It may seem obvious, but you would be surprised how many people start without finding out exactly what their goal or final product needs to be.
The first step is what. What are you building? Is your building project a new house, or a master suite? Is it a new church, or a new family center? Do you need a new bathroom, or just new fixtures?
Next comes... the program. This is a list of your wants and your needs.
From programming, you move on to design. First, you will come up with a general or schematic design. You need one toilet, two sinks, and one shower. Then, refine your design. Don't put the toilet in front of that window!
Focus on your needs list. Season it with items from your want list.
Now, you need to figure out how to get the project done. Who is doing that? Can you do it yourself? Be honest!
Using a contractor is not always needed... but hiring a licensed contractor or builder may actually save you money. Remember, it's not just the cost of the tiles! It's managing the construction process, the energy, the effort... and most important... the know-how.
